Where is Artist Point?
Artist Point is a breathtaking alpine destination in Washington State, located at the very end of Mount Baker Highway (SR 542). Nestled between the towering peaks of Mount Baker and Mount Shuksan in the North Cascades, it offers some of the most spectacular mountain views in the Pacific Northwest. Sitting at an elevation of about 5,100 feet, Artist Point is known for its dramatic landscapes, scenic hiking trails, and incredible year-round beauty. In the summer, the area boasts lush meadows, wildflowers, and sweeping panoramic vistas, while winter transforms it into a snowy wonderland accessible primarily by snowshoe or ski touring. Whether you're eloping at sunrise or catching alpenglow at sunset, Artist Point delivers an unforgettable backdrop for your special day.
How to Get to Artist Point
Getting to Artist Point is an adventure in itself, offering a scenic drive through the North Cascades before reaching the stunning alpine views at the end of Mount Baker Highway.
Directions from Seattle:
Start at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA):
If you’re flying in, SEA is the closest major airport. From here, rent a car and prepare for a gorgeous road trip to the North Cascades.
Drive to Bellingham, WA:
Take I-5 North for about 90 miles (1.5 hours) to Bellingham.
If needed, this is a good place to stop for food, supplies, or fuel before heading into the mountains.
Head Toward Glacier, WA:
Take Exit 255 for WA-542 E/Mount Baker Highway and drive east for about 31 miles to reach Glacier.
Glacier is the last town with gas, food, and services, so make sure to fuel up before continuing.
Drive from Glacier to Artist Point:
Continue east on WA-542 (Mount Baker Highway) for 24 miles.
The road winds through stunning alpine scenery, passing Mount Baker Ski Area before ending at the Artist Point parking lot.
Important Notes about the road to Artist Point:
Seasonal Access: Artist Point is only accessible by car in summer and early fall (typically July–October) when the road is plowed. In winter, the road beyond the ski area is closed due to heavy snowfall, and access is only possible by snowshoeing or skiing.
Road Conditions: Check the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) website for road closures before your trip.
Parking: The lot can fill up quickly, especially on weekends, so arriving early or near sunset can help avoid crowds.
Once you arrive, you’ll be rewarded with one of the most breathtaking views in Washington—perfect for an unforgettable elopement!
Best time of year to get Married at Artist Point
If you’re dreaming of an epic mountaintop wedding at Artist Point, timing is everything! The best window for an easy, stress-free elopement here is late July through early October—when the road is open, the snow is (mostly) gone, and the views are absolutely unreal.
July & August – Peak summer means wildflowers, long days, and warm(ish) weather. It’s the most popular time, so expect some hikers around.
September – Crisp air and the first hints of fall colors. Honestly, a perfect sweet spot!
Early October – Stunning autumn vibes, but be ready for the first snowfall, which can close the road with little warning.
Winter & Spring? Unless you’re down for a backcountry adventure (snowshoes or skis required), it’s best to avoid mid-October through June—the road is closed, and the snow can be deep.
A few pro Tips
Sunset is magical—the light on Mount Shuksan is next-level.
Weekdays are best—fewer people, more privacy.
Be prepared—mountain weather does what it wants!

Artist Point Wedding Permit & Passes
A common question we get asked about weddings and elopements at Artist Point is: “Do we need a permit to get married here?” Here's the scoop: The Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest doesn't require a permit for groups of 75 or fewer. However, the ranger station does ask couples to fill out a “request form” to help keep track of events in the area. This isn't an approval process, just a way for them to stay informed. As your wedding photographers, we’ll help you handle this form so you don’t have to worry about it.
Do I need a parking permit at Artist Point?
Yes, In addition to the request form, you’ll need a day pass to park at Artist Point. You can buy this pass either online or in person at the ranger station in Glacier, Washington. It's a $5 fee for the day or $30 for the annual Northwest Forest Pass.
Things to think about when getting married at Artist Point
Guest Count
If you're having a small, intimate ceremony (under 12 people), you have a lot more flexibility in choosing your location without worrying about permits or space.
For groups of up to 25 people, places like the Shuksan Picnic Area or Austin Pass Picnic Area give you more space but still offer stunning views.
Anything larger than 25 people can be tricky—there's limited parking and the area is remote, so it’s not ideal for big weddings.
Are dogs allowed at Artist Point?
Dogs are allowed in the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest. Ensure your pet is on a leash and prepared for the terrain and weather conditions.
How long is the Hike to Artist Point?
The hike to Artist Point in Mount Baker is relatively short and easy, making it a perfect destination for breathtaking views without the strenuous effort of a long hike. The trail to Artist Point is about 1.5 miles one way, with an elevation gain of around 500 feet. However, if you're not up for hiking, you can drive to the top and still enjoy stunning panoramic views of Mount Baker, Mount Shuksan, and the surrounding alpine landscape. It's a great option for those who want epic scenery without the hike!
Crowds
Artist Point is a popular spot, so expect more crowds, especially during July, August, and September.
Best times to avoid crowds: Early mornings, weekdays, or early October tend to be less busy.
If you’re looking for a quieter spot, we highly suggest hiking to more remote locations. We have some secret and quiet spots in mind in case your are looking for seclusion.
Weather
It can change quickly: Even in the summer, the weather can be unpredictable, with fog, wind, or rain showing up unexpectedly.
Snow can linger: The road to Artist Point doesn’t open until mid-July due to snow, so check ahead if you’re getting married early in the summer.
