What is a hiking elopement?

A hiking elopement is a unique and adventurous way to exchange vows and celebrate your love amidst the beauty of nature. Instead of a traditional wedding ceremony in a venue, a hiking elopement typically involves hiking to a picturesque location, such as a mountaintop, forest clearing, or secluded beach, to say "I do."

Couples who choose a hiking elopement often prioritize intimacy, adventure, and connection with the outdoors. They may exchange vows surrounded by breathtaking scenery, with only a select few close friends or family members present, or even just the couple themselves.

Hiking elopements can range from easy trails suitable for beginners to more challenging hikes for the adventurous at heart. They offer a chance to combine the joy of hiking with the romance of a wedding ceremony, creating unforgettable memories in nature's embrace.

Whether you're drawn to mountaintop vistas, serene lakeshores, or hidden waterfalls, a hiking elopement allows you to create a wedding experience that reflects your love for each other and your sense of adventure. It's a chance to step off the beaten path and start your journey together in a truly unforgettable way.

5 reasons why couples plan a hiking elopement:

  1. Intimacy: It's just you, your partner, and perhaps a few very close friends or family members (and maybe an officiant unless you're going for a symbolic ceremony). You can truly be yourselves, without the pressure of a hundred eyes on you.

  2. Nature as your venue: No need to break the bank renting a venue when Mother Nature offers up the most breathtaking settings for free. Whether it's the grandeur of a mountain range or the tranquility of a forest, the ambiance is unbeatable.

  3. Adventure awaits: Kicking off your marriage with an adventure sets a thrilling precedent for your life together. It's a story you'll never tire of telling.

  4. Keep it simple, keep it green: With a hiking elopement, your carbon footprint is basically just your hiking boots on the trail. It's simplicity at its finest, focusing on the essentials of your commitment to each other.

  5. One-of-a-kind experience: Your wedding photos won't look like anyone else's. How many couples can say they exchanged rings on a cliff edge in Oregon or on a mountaintop in the Dolomites?

How to plan your hiking elopement

1. Find an elopement photographer who is willing to hike

Finding an elopement photographer who is not only skilled behind the lens but also willing to hike to the most remote and breathtaking locations is essential for capturing the essence of your hiking elopement. Look for a photographer who shares your passion for adventure and understands the unique challenges and opportunities of outdoor shoots. They should be comfortable with hiking long distances, traversing rugged terrain, and possibly even camping out to catch that perfect sunrise or sunset shot. With the right photographer by your side, you can trust that every moment of your intimate ceremony amidst nature's splendor will be beautifully preserved for a lifetime of cherished memories.

2. Find the perfect hiking trail

When planning a hiking elopement, finding the perfect trail is paramount. Several factors come into play when making this decision, ensuring that the trail not only meets your expectations but also aligns with your vision for the ceremony and celebration.

How far am I willing to hike and what am I comfortable with?

First and foremost, consider your own hiking abilities and comfort level. Determine how far you're willing to hike and the type of terrain you feel confident navigating. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or new to the trails, selecting a route that matches your fitness level ensures a safe and enjoyable experience.

How many guest am I bringing and what are their capabilities?

Next, take into account the capabilities of any guests you plan to invite. If you're bringing along friends or family members, consider their hiking experience and physical fitness. Opt for a trail that is accessible and manageable for everyone in your party, ensuring that no one feels overwhelmed by the journey.

Tip: Planning a challenging hike for your wedding ceremony, but worried some guests might struggle with the trail? Consider choosing an accessible location solely for the ceremony, and arrange to meet up with your guests before or after your more demanding hike. This way, everyone can be included in the celebration, regardless of their hiking ability.

Are you bringing a furry friend along with you?

If you're planning to include a furry friend in your elopement festivities, factor in their needs as well. Choose a pet-friendly trail with amenities like water sources and shade, and make sure your four-legged companion is comfortable with the distance and terrain. On top of that, National Parks don’t allow dogs on their trails which will limit your trail options.

What type of scenery do I want in my wedding photos

When selecting a trail, think about the type of scenery you envision for your elopement photos. Whether you dream of panoramic mountain views, serene forest landscapes, or cascading waterfalls, choose a route that offers the backdrop you desire. Research potential trails and browse photos to get a sense of the scenery along the way, ensuring it aligns with your vision for the perfect outdoor ceremony.

With their expertise in outdoor photography and knowledge of scenic locations, they can offer valuable recommendations tailored to your preferences and needs. Additionally, utilizing online resources like AllTrails or Washington Trails Association (WTA) can be incredibly helpful in finding the perfect trail. These platforms provide detailed information, including trail difficulty, length, and user reviews, helping you make an informed decision about your elopement route. Trusting in the expertise of your photographer and leveraging online tools ensures that your hiking elopement unfolds on a trail that perfectly captures the beauty and spirit of your special day.3. • Bring along a board game, knitting supplies, or letters from loved ones to enjoy during breaks along the trail, adding a personal and cozy touch to your journey.

  • Plan for stargazing and astrophotography during the evening, immersing yourselves in the beauty of the night sky and capturing magical moments together.

  • If you're camping nearby, consider ending your day with a cozy campfire and indulging in the classic treat of s'mores, creating lasting memories under the stars.

Frequently asked questions about hiking elopements

Do I have to hike in my wedding attire?

Absolutely not! Your wedding day is your chance to blaze your own trail, quite literally! While hiking in your wedding attire could make for some epic wedding photos, it might not be the most practical choice, especially for longer treks. So, why not kick off your journey in some comfy hiking gear? Picture yourselves conquering the trails together, laughing and enjoying the adventure, with your wedding attire safely tucked away, waiting for its grand entrance. Then, when you've reached your chosen spot, it's time for the ultimate transformation!

How do I pack my wedding attire in my backpack?

  1. Pack it & roll it: Start by placing your dress, suit, or outfit into a garment bag, similar to the one you may have received when you purchased it. Then, instead of folding it, gently roll it up to minimize wrinkles and save space. Once rolled, carefully fit it into your backpack, ensuring it's snug and secure for your hike.

  2. Pack it & clip it: Place your outfit into a garment bag as before, but this time, fold it up a couple of times to compact it. Next, use a bungee cord, twine, or rope to bundle it together tightly. Finally, attach a carabiner to the top of your backpack and clip the bundled outfit securely to the outside. This method keeps your attire easily accessible and frees up space inside your backpack for other essentials.

Where do I get ready on the trail?

Finding a spot to get ready on the trail largely depends on your preference for privacy and comfort. For those seeking a simple solution, hanging your wedding attire on a tree and changing behind it can suffice. However, if you desire a bit more seclusion, consider bringing along a foldable changing tent. These portable tents offer a private space for changing and are relatively easy to set up, although folding them back up may provide some amusement. With a changing tent, you can transform any spot along the trail into your own personal dressing room, ensuring you're ready to shine when it's time to say "I do

How do I keep my hair and makeup in place while hiking?

Keeping your hair and makeup intact while hiking can be a challenge, but there are some tips to help maintain your look:

  • Choose long-lasting products: Opt for makeup and hair products that are designed for longevity, such as waterproof mascara, long-wear foundation, and setting sprays. These products are more likely to withstand the rigors of hiking.

  • Keep it light: Avoid heavy makeup that can easily smudge or melt in the heat. Instead, go for a natural and light makeup look that enhances your features without being too over-the-top.

  • Bring a touch-up kit: Pack a small touch-up kit with essentials like blotting papers, powder, lipstick, and a mini hairbrush or comb. Use these items to freshen up your look along the trail as needed.

  • Secure hairstyles: Opt for hairstyles that are secure and less likely to come undone while hiking. Braids, low buns, or ponytails are great options that can withstand movement and wind.

  • Consider hiring a makeup artist: If you're concerned about keeping your makeup flawless throughout the day, consider hiring a professional makeup artist who specializes in outdoor events. Some makeup artists even offer hiking services, ensuring you look picture-perfect from the trail to the altar.

How to hike with a bouquet/florals?

Packing your flowers in your backpack for your elopement adventure is simpler than you might think! Here's how to do it:

  • Prep ahead of time: The day before your elopement, store your flowers in the refrigerator to keep them fresh. Avoid squishing them in the back of your car or any other cramped spaces.

  • Keep them hydrated: On the day of your elopement, keep your flowers in water until the last possible moment before you leave the car. This will ensure they stay hydrated and vibrant for your ceremony.

  • Wrap the stems: Just before you hit the trail, wrap the stems of your flowers in either wet paper towels or a damp rag to maintain their freshness during the hike. This will help prevent them from wilting or drying out.

  • Pack strategically: Place the wrapped flowers in an accessible pocket with a zipper in your backpack, or secure them with bungee cords if your pack has them. Make sure they're positioned upright to minimize any crushing or damage.

  • Use a waterproof bag: Consider bringing along a waterproof dry bag to place the stems of the flowers in. This will not only keep them separate from your other belongings but also ensure that nothing else in your backpack gets wet if the flowers leak.

How much coverage do I need for a hiking elopement?

This really depends on how much hiking you are planning to do. But a good rule of thumb is 1 mile equals approximately 1 hour of coverage. Besides hiking, we may want to take photos at scenic spots along the trail, account for challenging weather conditions, or simply prefer a leisurely pace. Additionally, it's essential to allocate time for other activities such as your ceremony, a picnic, etc. Here's a general idea of how much hiking you can include in each of our packages:

  • Half-day Package (5 hours): 2-3 miles

  • Full-day Package (9 hours): 5-6 miles

  • Sunrise to Sunset (11 hours): 7-8 miles

  • 2-day Package (15 hours): 10-12 miles
